Sones De Mexico, thinking about El Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, November 1
The Two Worlds shows came down this week and the new exhibits are being installed. Though most of us staffers are going through what can only be called, "Two Worlds withdrawal," since we ate, breathed and slept all things Two Worlds, we're now getting into the grove of our fall line-up.
El Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead is a biggie. And, Sones de Mexico, a biggie band is going to be performing at our celebration on Saturday, November 1. There will be a children' concert at 11:30 a.m. and concert for everyone at 7 p.m.
It's a ways away, but we're already psyched for it.
Save the date!

Lian Zhen teaches Chinese Paintings

Lian Zhen is teaching a Chinese Painting class this week to a packed class.
He's been teaching two primary paintings styles: Detail and Spontaneous. Students of all levels are learning how to use Chinese brushes, the ink and colors, as well as the theory of Asian Art. Fish, birds, flowers and landscapes have been among the subjects the students are creating. Everyone will complete eight paintings before the week-long workshop is over. It's pretty amazing to see the quality of work being done by even the novices.

VSA visits the Indianapolis Art Center*
*Excerpted from the October 2008 VSAI newsletter
On Thursday, August 21st, VSAI students, friends and family met at the Indianapolis Art Center to participate in VSAI’s Indianapolis Art Center Day. This event was the second of its kind as a part of a new VSAI initiative to help expand the reach of our students into our local arts resources. The first event was a similar trip to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2007.
Community Class students, their guest, VSAI Teaching Artists and Indianapolis Art Center Teaching Artists joined together to participate in art making and art appreciation activities. The group enjoyed a glass blowing demonstration and an art project based around the IAC exhibits “Art, Harmony and Nature: From the Land of Confucius” and “Two Worlds, One Language”.
David A. Kwasigroh, Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services, led a tour of Becky Fehsenfeld’s exhibit “Outside Looking In”. Students also participated in a printmaking activity based around the Chinese Zodiac.
Carrie Claycomb, one of the four VSAI Teaching Artists who attended with the group said- “I heard a lot of reactions from parents that were stunned about what Indy has to offer (i.e. The Art Center’s Arts Park, art shows, public events, etc...) I thought it was good outreach for our students to see what else is out there.”
Our thanks to Dave Thomas and Anne Minnich-Beck of the Indianapolis Art Center for their assistance in planning this special event.

Vision of an inclusive community,
Strength of shared resources, and
Access to artistic expression that unites us all.
